  • Call your local one-call utility locator service before you start a digging project to make sure you won’t contact buried gas pipelines and other utilities
  • Know and recognize the odor of a natural gas leak
  • Do not disturb utility locator flags along streets or sidewalks
  • Make sure all adults in your home know where to find your natural gas shut-off valve and how to use it
  • Do not allow children to play in areas with a natural gas range or any other gas appliances
  • Keep clutter and flammable objects are stored away from the natural gas water heater and furnace
  • Do not hang laundry to dry on gas or water pipes
  • Is the flame on you gas appliances steady and blue
  • Use your natural gas oven and range only for cooking, never to heat your home or dry clothes
  • Have natural gas appliances installed and serviced by a quality repair specialist
  • Install and use carbon monoxide alarms per the manufacturer’s instructions
  • Keep chimney and all vents clean and in good condition
  • Keep all paper, clothing, curtains, and flammable liquids away from open flames
  • Keep at least one multipurpose fire extinguisher in your home, preferably in the kitchen

Beginning September 2026, Indiana Utilities Corporation will begin transitioning to Ulta Sonic meters. These meter change outs will begin September 1, 2026, and will take place during regular office hours Monday – Friday 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM.
