- Call your local one-call utility locator service before you start a digging project to make sure you won’t contact buried gas pipelines and other utilities
- Know and recognize the odor of a natural gas leak
- Do not disturb utility locator flags along streets or sidewalks
- Make sure all adults in your home know where to find your natural gas shut-off valve and how to use it
- Do not allow children to play in areas with a natural gas range or any other gas appliances
- Keep clutter and flammable objects are stored away from the natural gas water heater and furnace
- Do not hang laundry to dry on gas or water pipes
- Is the flame on you gas appliances steady and blue
- Use your natural gas oven and range only for cooking, never to heat your home or dry clothes
- Have natural gas appliances installed and serviced by a quality repair specialist
- Install and use carbon monoxide alarms per the manufacturer’s instructions
- Keep chimney and all vents clean and in good condition
- Keep all paper, clothing, curtains, and flammable liquids away from open flames
- Keep at least one multipurpose fire extinguisher in your home, preferably in the kitchen
